Sylhet continues to play an important role in the economic growth of this country through the tea produced from tea gardens. Bangladesh earns a huge amount of foreign currency by exporting this tea abroad. All areas around Surma basin and Sylhet are covered with tea plantations and for this reason tea is one of the national resources of Bangladesh.

Among the total 163 tea gardens located in different parts of Bangladesh, there are 3 largest tea gardens from which the amount of tea production is worth mentioning. About three lakh workers work daily in these 163 tea gardens out of which 75% are women and 25% are men. Women and tribal workers are more valued in tea gardens because women are better at picking tea leaves than men.
