History of Saint Martha’s Junior High School
Sisters of Our Lady of the Mission (RNDM) had been rending their service in Sylhet Division since 1937. Four Sisters came to Sylhet to provide pastoral care in the Government-owned hospital there. Because of political unrest Sisters could not continue the work.
After some years, Holy Cross Priests invited the Sisters to give pastoral service in Sreemangal. So it was one of the means to take care of the school children. From then on Sisters worked in the Tea Garden and Punjee schools. Sisters lived with the people, some times one week or two weeks continually when the needs arose and gave them all round education. We had 34 Primary Schools which are still continuing. After finishing Primary education, most of the children drop out from their study as they cannot continue further study due to financial difficulties. Sisters lived at the Church campus about 24 year. After that Sisters shifted at Deb Bari Lane in 1997 in order to provide higher education for these poor children.
The dream of opening Saint Martha’s school came true in 2002 with 15 students. Sister Monica Gomes RNDM is the first Headmistress of Saint Martha’s School. She worked untiringly to bring up the school as the best school in Sreemangal. The school is now situated at Deb Bari lane, Habigonj Road in Sreemangal .
